New Caney Resident Captures a Close Look at a Raccoon A New Caney resident captured this raccoon clinging to a tree, peeking around the trunk just a short distance from the camera. Moments like these remind us how much there is to appreciate about nature right here in our community. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, raccoons are common throughout Texas and generally weigh 7 to 20 pounds. Their nimble paws help them climb trees, giving these wild neighbors a handy way to explore above ground. What's the most unique wildlife you've encountered in New Caney?

There's a family of raccoons (mom and three kids) that frequent our back patio. There's also an itty-bitty female possum who shows up almost every night. The resident cats just ignore everything. We have a squirrel guard around the shepherd's crook that supports our bird feeder and hummingbird feeder. It's pretty effective, except for one acrobatic squirrel. He climbs up 15-20 feet on a tree that's 9 feet away. Then he launches into mid-air and lands atop the shepherd's crook. To add insult to injury, he uses the top of the squirrel guard as a footrest while he's munching from the bird feeder.

Gotta be careful! They are cute and all but.... don't get to close as they can be vicious if irritated.
